the origin of paradise

Look at this wall—
peer into this mind.

Walking walls,
crumbling walls,
walls over walls,
tumbling over walls.

Maintaining walls,
such a public matter.
Save breath,
save the intimate dream.

Look at this wall—
peer into this mind.

Inspiration: The word paradise is derived from a compound meaning ‘around’ and ‘to make, to form’ a wall. I didn’t learn this until later in life, long after absorbing stories of blissful gardens, innocence, and love. Lately it seems paradise has always been filled with walls, leaving little room for dreams. But this mind is a boundless, intimate dream.

My poem is a simple lunchtime scribble, but there are many dreamers and dreams, and “in their haphazardings and widescatterings at times even a clear-cut meaning may slip through.”
