consequences

i’ll have an overwhelming feeling i’m late for something
like i’m not worthy of existing within this moment
just as i am

so, i’ll drive myself to work harder
if i could only find something worth working on
maybe i’ll get better at conversation, for example

or maybe i’ll just slide into a warm spring
with a bunch of monkeys that have done the same
staring off into space

until i get too hungry to stay put
then i’ll eat something
or maybe something else comes along

like sharing a reflection of a moon or a rose
it’s not like any of us are solving anything
by imagining we’re accomplishing more in life

than a bunch of us just sitting in a warm spring
the reward for a long life is old age
how does that sit with you

do you wish things were other than what they are
be careful with your answer
what you say has consequences, ancestor
